The Fall of the Confederate capitol : a chapter of reminiscences [manuscript], ca. 1915.

Serving in a regiment under the command of Gen. Butler, whose forces were closest to Richmond when the Confederate capitol was evacuated by Lee, April 2-3, 1865, Abbott's unit was one of the first to enter the city. In the weeks leading up to the event, he describes attacks on Forts Harrison and Gilmore and a visit from Gen. Grant in a carriage accompanied by Pres. Lincoln. Upon entering the city, sections of which were in flames, the soldiers were greeted with hostility by the white population. After reaching the mansion of Jefferson Davis, the soldiers were posted around the city to restore order. Abbott describes the appearance of Capitol Square, littered with the archives of the Confederate government, and the tumultuous reception given to Pres. Lincoln by crowds of African Americans. Though written from memory years after, Abbott's recollections are vivid and ring true.
